Many practitioners reach a stage in their career where they want to share their skills and experience with others. If you’ve been wondering what it takes to set up your own training academy, the good news is that it’s possible and we can help guide you through the process.
What’s involved in becoming an accredited training provider?
To issue certificates and run recognised training, you’ll need to work with an accreditation company. They will check your manuals and lesson plans to make sure your courses meet their standards. Popular accreditation companies in the UK include:
- VTCT
- CIBTAC
- Centre of CPD Excellence
- BABTAC
- ABT
- The Guild of Beauty Therapists
Choosing the right accreditor depends on what you want to offer and how you’d like your training recognised.
What qualifications do you need?
To start teaching, the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is the minimum requirement. With this, you can teach courses in the treatments you’re already qualified in, usually up to Level 2 or 3. For higher levels, you’ll need further qualifications such as the CET or DET.
Other considerations
- Insurance: You’ll need to check your current insurer covers you as a teacher, or take out specialist cover.
- Premises: If you’re teaching from home, check both insurance and council approval requirements.
- Course materials: You can write your own manuals or purchase pre-written ones and adapt them.
- Certificates: You’ll design and issue certificates once your accreditor has approved your courses.
Why train to teach?
Running your own academy can be incredibly rewarding. It allows you to:
- Diversify your career.
- Support the next generation of practitioners.
- Add a new revenue stream to your business.
